“I was an undersized power forward who could handle the ball and defend, and I was a crazy athlete. When I left Saganaw to go to Texas Tech in 1993, my oldest son was just a one-year-old. I was playing and trying to succeed for a whole different reason than most. I had to feed my kid. I wasn’t worry about the spoils of basketball, just a way to take care of my style. Playing basketball afforded me a scholarship, which afforded me the chance to get educated and the chance to eventually get to play in the NBA. I didn’t grow up like these little kids now playing AAU all the way up. Lots of that time, I was just running right around the streets. The game introduced itself to me late, but I think that gave me a greater appreciation for it.”

The city of Crockett is normally a sleepy East Texas town but on Monday it was anything but as television cameras and quite a few media descended upon the local high school.

Crockett has a star football player on its hands and he received a huge honor on Monday morning. The U.S. Army All-American Bowl Selection Tour made a stop to officially invite wide receiver Dominique Wheeler to play in January’s game. He is one of only 90 prospects from across the country to have the opportunity to do so.

While the cameras rolled Wheeler received the invitation from current active members of the United States Army. The Texas Tech commit was humbled by the honor and all of the attention placed on him for the day.

“Today was a special day for me and meant so much to me,” Wheeler told Rivals.com. “This is only a once-in-a-lifetime thing and I’m glad I got that chance. I’m proud to say I’m a U.S. Army All-American. My day couldn’t get any better.”

A Big 12 source who supports further expansion said the addition of Louisville is important to West Virginia, which sits 871 miles from the nearest Big 12 member. “We have to explore what type of growth would have to be better for our conference,” the source said. “There’s no data that a conference of 16 is better than a conference of 12. In our case, the number is not the issue so much as the quality.

“But to make it better for West Virginia, we have to add Louisville. For our conference stability, adding Louisville is good for us because it would be good for West Virginia. The more we can get people to start talking about the greater good, the more stable this conference can become.”

Wide receiver Marcus Johnson (League City, Texas/Clear Springs) continues to have one of the more impressive senior seasons in the state of Texas and college programs continue to take notice.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder with 4.43 speed in the 40-yard dash remains a solid commitment to Texas Tech, but that hasn’t stopped programs from throwing their hat in the ring.

Texas A&M has had an offer on the table for the Houston area product, first as a defensive back in the summer, and now as a wide receiver. Of late, Texas and Miami (Fla.) have been calling Clear Springs head coach Clint Hartman to express their interest.

Through ten games, Johnson has 54 receptions for 981 yards and 11 touchdowns, 28 carries for 297 yards and a score and two kick returns for touchdowns. He is a three-star rated prospect (89) by 247Sports.

Texas Tech has a fight on its hands to keep Johnson committed. Should the Longhorns eventually offer, he would very likely make the switch.

The University of Texas System regents have chosen to invest $10 million in a start-up company that provides web-based advising services to university students. Perhaps a good idea, although unlike nearly all other investments of the System’s endowment, this one was made by fiat of the Board of Regents with no consultation of its investment advisors. Interestingly, the start-up is run by a man who was on Gov. Rick Perry’s re-election finance committee and by another whose father was a previous chancellor of the System (with the former chancellor being part-owner of the company).

This is one of the best examples I’ve ever seen of successful rent-seeking in the public sector (although laypeople might use a less felicitous term than rent-seeking). This blog needs a contest for the most outrageous example of this behavior, and this is my entry into that contest. So, dear readers, please share your examples in the comments section.

People will certainly continue to blame Texas, though, and while it doesn’t bother Dodds personally — “I don’t give a flip what you think about me,” he said — it bothers him when people perceive his university that way.

“I’ve talked to people like you until I’m blue in the face, and said the same thing, which is true, and out of it we get people in Kansas City writing that we’re absolute bullies, and people writing somewhere else that it’s our fault A&M’s leaving,” Dodds said. “We just are easy to blame, I guess.”

“Is the Big 12 really going to stay at 10? – As long as the Big 12 is unable to get a deal done with BYU, I see the conference staying at 10. While Louisville has solid athletic assets, it’s simply not a single expansion candidate school that the Big 12 would be willing to go up to 11 for and then split the league’s TV money different ways. The Big Ten stayed at 11 for many years, but that was because (a) Penn State was school #11 and (b) they had always been waiting for a legit football king (initially Notre Dame and eventually Nebraska) as school #12. The schools involved for the Big Ten were more than worth going up to an uneven numbered alignment and waiting for in such alignment. That’s not quite the case for the Big 12. At the same time, schools like Cincinnati won’t really provide enough revenue to be taken instead of BYU in a 12-school alignment. Now, I still have a hard time believing that BYU won’t end up in the Big 12 at some point. If/when that happens, I’d fully expect Louisville to make the move to the Big 12, too.”
